Talking Newstape
Talking Newspaper
Glossop Talking Newspaper supplies a free weekly CD of local news to anyone who is blind or visually impaired in the Glossopdale area. It is edited and recorded from local newspapers every Thursday and sent in the post, free. The 45-minute programme of news, features and items of local interest covers Glossop, Padfield, Hadfield, Tintwistle, Gamesley, Chisworth and Charlesworth.
The talking newspaper, established 21 years ago, is operated by skilled volunteers and is funded entirely by voluntary donations. For many years, the news was provided on audio cassette tape but a full complement of digital recording and copying equipment was recently introduced to provide a crystal-clear 'Newsdisk' each week.
For anyone who has difficulty reading small print, the easy digest of news on a quality CD is ideal. The system is easy to operate - the listener simply takes the disk out of the special yellow envelope and sends the envelope back in the post, free, in order to receive next week's news.
To find out more, call the volunteer centre on 865722 or call David Andrew on 869566 or call into the volunteer centre at Howard Town House, High Street East, Glossop (next to the leisure centre).
